General Comments: It's a shrub to 2 metres high from west Western Australia. Leaves are stiff oak shaped about 10cm long. Flower has dark brown bracts and a lime yellow centre.

  • A family of 76 species native to South Western Australia which was named after Sir Joseph Banks who first collected these plants in 1770.
  •  Cylindrical, brush like flower heads can range from 5 to 30 cm long and 6 to12 cm wide.
  •  Flowers are typically orange or yellow in hue.
  • As the flower spikes or heads age, the flower parts dry up and may turn shades of orange, tan or dark brown colour.  Old flower spikes are commonly referred to as "cones", although they are not: cones only occur in conifers and cycads.

Grading Information

  • Most commercial banksias on the market have a minimum stem length of 40 to 50 cm and some varieties are as tall as 70cm.
